How I Design Custom Polynesian Tattoos
Ameo doesn't start with a sketch. He starts with a conversation. How a custom Polynesian tattoo goes from your story to a design that moves with your body.
People often ask me how I come up with my designs.
The truth is, I don't start with a sketch.
I start with a conversation.
Before I put pencil to paper, I want to know who you are. I want to understand what brought you to my studio, what this tattoo means to you and what story you want to carry with you for the rest of your life.
That's the difference between a custom Polynesian tattoo and simply choosing a design off the wall.
Every Story Is Different
I've been fortunate enough to tattoo people from all walks of life.
Some are celebrating a milestone. Some are honouring family. Others have overcome challenges that have shaped who they are today. Some simply want a tattoo that represents the person they've become.
No matter the reason, every story is unique.
That's why I believe every tattoo should be unique too.
I don't keep a library of sleeves or half-finished designs waiting for the next client. Every piece I create is designed specifically for the person wearing it.
The Consultation Is the Most Important Part
Many people think the tattoo begins when the machine starts.
For me, it begins long before that.
When we sit down together, I'll ask questions about your life, your family, your values and the things that matter most to you.
Sometimes clients know exactly what they want.
More often, they don't, and that's completely okay.
My job is to guide the conversation, understand your vision and help uncover the story that deserves to be told.
Those conversations become the foundation of the artwork.
Turning Your Story Into Design
Once I understand your story, I begin selecting the symbols, patterns and composition that best represent it.
Every element has a reason for being there.
Nothing is added simply to fill space.
The balance of the design is just as important as the meaning behind it. I think carefully about how each section flows into the next so the entire tattoo feels connected.
When someone looks at the finished piece, I want them to see one complete story, not a collection of separate symbols.
Designing for Your Body
A great Polynesian tattoo isn't just about meaning.
It's also about movement.
Your body has natural lines, muscles and shape, and a well-designed tattoo should work with them, not against them.
Whether it's a sleeve, chest piece, back piece or leg tattoo, I design every piece to complement your body so it looks balanced from every angle.
That's one of the reasons I never copy someone else's tattoo.
What works beautifully on one person may not work on another.
Refining the Details
Once the design comes together, we'll go through it together.
I'll explain the concepts behind the artwork, answer your questions and make sure the design feels right before we begin tattooing.
This is a collaborative process.
I want you to walk into your appointment feeling excited and confident because you understand not only what you're getting, but why.
More Than a Tattoo
Over the years, I've realised that the tattoos people remember most aren't always the biggest or the most detailed.
They're the ones that mean something.
The ones that remind them of where they've come from, who they love, what they've overcome or the person they're striving to become.
That's why I still approach every design the same way I always have.
With respect.
With purpose.
And with the belief that no two stories should ever look the same.
