The question Ameo hears more than any other: can you get a Polynesian tattoo if you're not Polynesian? Yes, when it comes from a place of respect. Here's what that means in practice.
This is probably the question I'm asked more than any other.
"Can I get a Polynesian tattoo if I'm not Polynesian?"
My answer is always the same…
Yes, but it should come from a place of respect.
For me, Polynesian tattooing is about more than creating something that looks good. It's about understanding the traditions that inspired it and making sure the artwork tells your story in a respectful way.
That's where the journey begins.
Respect Comes Before the Tattoo
Polynesian tattooing has been part of Pacific cultures for thousands of years. It's deeply connected to family, identity, status and life's journey.
That's why I encourage every client to spend a little time learning about the culture behind the art before we even begin designing.
You don't need to become an expert. You just need to appreciate that these designs have meaning.
When people approach the process with genuine respect and curiosity, it changes the entire experience.
I Don't Believe in Copying Tattoos
Every now and then someone will show me a photo they've found online and ask if I can recreate it.
The answer is always no.
The tattoo you're looking at belongs to someone else's story. Their experiences, their family and their journey are different from yours.
I don't believe anyone should wear another person's story.
Instead, we'll create something that's completely original, something that represents who you are.
Your Heritage Doesn't Define Your Story
Many of the people who come to my studio aren't of Polynesian heritage.
Some have grown up surrounded by Pacific culture. Others have partners or family connections. Many simply have a genuine appreciation for the art and the meaning behind it.
Whatever brings you here, my role is to create a tattoo that's authentic to you while honouring the traditions that inspired it.
That doesn't mean pretending to tell someone else's cultural story.
It means creating your own.
Every Consultation Starts With Questions
Before I draw a single line, I want to get to know you.
We'll talk about your life, your family, what you've overcome, what you value and why you're choosing a Polynesian tattoo.
Those conversations become the foundation of the design.
By the end of the consultation, I'm not just drawing patterns. I'm translating your story into artwork.
That's something a template can never do.

Can I choose the symbols I want?
Absolutely. I'll explain the meaning behind different elements and help you choose symbols that genuinely reflect your story.
Can you copy a tattoo I've seen online?
No. I can certainly use it as inspiration to understand what style you like, but every tattoo I create is custom designed from the ground up.
Do I need to know exactly what I want before we meet?
Not at all.
Many clients arrive with only a few ideas. That's perfectly fine. My job is to guide you through the process and help shape those ideas into a design that's uniquely yours.
It's About More Than the Finished Tattoo
One of the things I love most about this work is seeing how connected people become to their tattoo once they understand the meaning behind it.
When every section has purpose, the tattoo becomes more than artwork.
It becomes a reminder of where you've been, what you've overcome and what's important to you.
That's what I want every client to walk away with.
