The Complete Guide to Polynesian Tattoos

A Polynesian tattoo isn't just a design that looks good on the skin. It's a story. Ameo opens the guide with what these tattoos really mean, why there isn't just one tradition, and how a piece that's uniquely yours comes to life.

If you're thinking about getting a Polynesian tattoo, the first thing I'd like you to know is this…

A Polynesian tattoo isn't just a design that looks good on the skin. It's a story.

For thousands of years, Polynesian people have used tattooing to represent identity, family, achievements, beliefs and life's journey. Every pattern has meaning. Every section has purpose. That's what makes this style so powerful.

One of the things I enjoy most about my work is helping people understand that before we even begin designing their tattoo.

Polynesian Tattooing Isn't Just One Style

A lot of people come to me asking for a "Polynesian tattoo", but they're often surprised to learn there isn't just one tradition.

Polynesian tattooing includes many different cultures, each with its own history and artistic language. Samoan, Māori, Marquesan, Hawaiian and Tahitian traditions all have their own styles and meanings, as well as other Pacific nations.

While they share common roots, they're not all the same, and I believe it's important to respect those differences.

The Tattoo Should Tell Your Story

One question I get asked all the time is…

"What do these symbols mean?"

The answer isn't always simple.

Some patterns represent protection. Others speak about family, courage, leadership, the ocean, growth or resilience. But the real beauty of Polynesian tattooing is that these elements come together to tell a personal story.

That's why I don't believe in copying tattoos from the internet.

Your tattoo should represent your life, not someone else's.

My Design Process

Every client who sits in my chair starts in exactly the same place, with a conversation.

I want to know who you are.

Why are you getting this tattoo?

What moments have shaped your life?

What values matter most to you?

Only after I understand those things do I start putting pencil to paper.

Every design I create is drawn specifically for the individual wearing it. I don't have a folder of pre-made sleeves or half-finished templates waiting for someone to choose from.

The story comes first.

The artwork follows.

Choosing the Right Artist Matters

Polynesian tattooing is incredibly detailed, but good design is about far more than clean lines.

The artist you choose should understand the traditions behind the work, respect where it comes from and take the time to create something that's unique to you.

This isn't the kind of tattoo you should rush.

It's something you'll wear for life.

More Than Ink

After many years of tattooing, one thing hasn't changed.

I still enjoy seeing the moment a client looks at their finished tattoo and recognises themselves in it.

That's what I aim for every single time.

Not just a beautiful tattoo…

A tattoo with meaning.

If you're ready to begin your own Polynesian tattoo journey, I'd love to hear your story and create something that's uniquely yours.
