A Newtown tattoo studio
where every design is drawn once.
I'm Ameo Bolaira, and I tattoo as Amzart out of Memento on King Street. I'm Fijian, and most of what I do is custom Polynesian and Fijian work, alongside black and grey realism, geometric and dotwork. I work by appointment, and I don't tattoo from a flash sheet.

Recent work
Hung the way it is worn
Every piece here was drawn for one person, and I won't tattoo any of them again. I've noted the tradition and the placement, because on skin both are part of the work.

How I work
People ask if they can come in and get tattooed the same day
I understand why. That is how most shops on King Street work, and there is nothing wrong with it. It just isn't how I work.
- I start with a conversation
- Not a sketch. Before I draw anything I want to know what brought you here and what this piece means to you. That conversation is free, and we can have it in person, by phone or by video.
- I draw every design once
- I won’t copy something you have seen online, and I won’t hand you a folder to pick from. I design your piece from the ground up, and I keep working on it until you tell me it is right.
- I am Fijian, and that matters here
- Polynesian tattooing is about more than making something that looks good. It carries traditions that belong to the people who created them, so my job is to make sure your piece tells your story in a way that respects them.

The artist
Nine years, one pair of hands
I was born in Naracivo, in Rewa Province, Fiji. I have spent nine years refining custom Polynesian and Fijian tattooing, alongside black and grey realism, geometric, ornamental and dotwork.
I design every piece myself. That is why my diary is booked rather than open, and why a conversation always comes before a date.
It is also why I take on cover ups and rework. A lot of artists would rather not, but reworking something you have lived with for years is some of the most rewarding work I do.

Common questions
- Where is the studio in Newtown?
- I work from Memento Tattoo on Level 5, 292 King Street, Newtown NSW 2042, a few minutes from Newtown station on the King Street side. Come through the street door and up to Level 5. I only tattoo by appointment, so please book before you come in.
- Do you take walk ins?
- No, and it is not because I am precious about it. I need to design your piece before I tattoo it, so every tattoo begins with a free consultation. You can book that online, and we can do it in person, by phone or by video.
- What styles does Amz tattoo?
- Custom Polynesian and Fijian work, Polynesian tribal, black and grey realism, geometric, ornamental and dotwork. I also take on cover ups and rework, which many artists would rather avoid.
- How much does a tattoo cost in Newtown?
- It depends on the size, the placement and how much detail is in it, so I give you a clear quote at your consultation with nothing hidden. Bigger pieces I plan across a few sessions rather than rushing them into one.
- How far ahead should I book?
- I can usually see you for a consultation within a week or two. Your session date depends on how big the piece is and how much design time it needs, and I will give you a realistic timeline when we talk.
